2005-12-10 - 7:28 p.m. -still better than marshmallowed yams

We were talking this past Thanksgiving about how stores tend around the holidays to group foods you wouldn't normally think of placing together but which combine to make holiday staples such as green bean casserole (canned green beans + french fried onions) or god-awful yam thing (canned yams + mini-marshmallows).

If I ran a grocery store, I would totally group random items in the hope that people would believe they were missing out on some traditional dish, turn into lemmings, and cook the foods together. And then fling themselves off a cliff. I might even go so far as to write out "recipes" on nearby, helpful chalkboards decorated with simple drawings of the foods in their natural unprocessed states and a folksy border of curlicues.

My top three displays would be:

3.) a pyramid of chilled hominy cans and a rack of chopped garlic jars arranged around the fresh lemons/limes trough in Produce

2.) bags of sun-dried tomatoes and a stack of King's Hawaiian Sweet Rolls tucked next to the sour cream and onion dip

1.) bunches of red (not green) grapes and jumbo jars of bread and butter pickles helpfully moved next to the Cream of Mushroom soup cans

Because Cream of Mushroom soup is the universal donor of foods. It mixes well with everything.
